When she wrote or spoke that about a decade ago, she knew it was wise, but not how apt, for 2017.
Since she spoke it, the Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series.
Hope is alive.

Fighting all ignorance requires patience, especially fighting our own ignorance. We fool ourselves most easily, Feynman noted.
My experience, with rather deep experience on both sides of the U.S. political aisle, is that it is conservatives — or more accurately, so-called conservatives — who are arrogantly ignorant and refusing to learn, and otherwise demonstrating all the problems you cite. Sure, there are exceptions.
Did you see what Mrs. Clinton actually said about deplorables? She said Trump’s supporters come in two kinds, people who are misled, but sincerely concerned, and racists, homophones, nationalists and sexists, who are deplorable. If you identify yourself as deplorable, should I assume you didn’t pay attention to what she said, or should I assume you are not ignorant, but genuinely deplorable?
In any case, Trump is a nationalist, he acts racist, he moves in ways that ruin America’s reputation, safety, security and economy. Anyone who supports him now cannot claim to be doing so out of ignorant hope, can they?
You’d probably benefit a lot from reading a good biography of Clinton, or perhaps her latest book.

You say: “Fighting ignorance requires patience.” This could imply you see yourself as informed and others as ignorant. That is a risky point of view, perhaps fed by liberal/progressive ideology. All political ideologies in our era are terribly dangerous to community and common good. They build walls rather than bridges. They make us cheer for logos and wins. They make us power hungry. They make us blind to the humanity of others with different points of view. Ms. Clinton has issues in this regard. She continues to refer to human beings—50 percent of Americans—as deplorables. She may restrain herself from using that non-word—deplorable is not a noun—but her attitude is clearly hateful. Is name calling liberal? Is it progressive? No, of course not. To put it into old terms, it is self-righteous sin. Does that make her evil? No! At least no more than anyone else. But she is a purveyor of ideological blindness, being blind herself. Ms. Clinton should learn to cross ideological and cultural boundaries. She should sojourn to the people she loathes. It could be the beginning of her social, political and soulful redemption.
