Raul Malo left us far too soon. I keep stumbling into recordings he made where he always shows why his performances are so loved.

“Far Away Places” is an old song, a simple song. Willie Nelson did a great version a while back. Sheryl Crow joined Willie for his 90th birthday celebration. It’s a simple song that calls to the wandering spirit many of us have. I still get cravings to hit the road and drive places Kathryn tells me we should fly to. This song couples travel lust with the advantages of books and libraries — “a book that I took from a shelf.” It’s pretty deep for a short tune with a beautiful melody.
Tommy Emmanuel recorded this with Raul. I’ll listen to it a hundred times in the next couple of months. Maybe you should, too.
