That hissing sound you hear is hope leaking out of Texas scientists, educators and students. Those trucks you hear are the moving trucks of science-based industries, leaving Texas for California (!), Massachusetts, Utah, New York, Florida and other states where science is taught well in public schools and assumed to be an educational priority.
In his year as chairman of the Texas State Board of Education, Don McLeroy has sown strife and discord among board members, professional staff, and educators across Texas. He insulted Texas Hispanics and did his best to eliminate Hispanic heritage from Texas literature studies. He repeatedly dismissed the advice of legally-required advisory committees of teachers and educators. He insulted top scientists who offered advice on science education, and he ignored education experts in the development of curricula and standards for Texas public schools. He promises a religious crusade to gut biology education in Texas.
The Texas Senate must confirm.

It’s a pity for Don to sow strife and discord among board members, professional staff, and fellow educators. Insulting Texas Hispanics and doing the best to eliminate Hispanic heritage from Texas literature studies is lack of professionalism. By rejecting advice of legally-required advisory committees of teachers and educators, insulted top scientists who offered advice on science education, and he ignoring education experts in the development of curricula and standards he was showing an example of the worst leader. His supporters should re-read some simple history and tell what has always the end of such leaders if not leaving only a legacy of tears among their off springs. Such characters are only doing injustice to the future aware that its foundation is hinged on science and professionalism.

I was going to say that Gov. Perry has demonstrated incompetence with this reappointment, but I suspect it’s worse than that, i.e., that Perry fully supports what McLeroy has done. Is there any chance that the Senate won’t confirm McLeroy? Is it worth getting people to write to their senators so that there’s at least some public awareness about this? I can see sciencebloggers and YouTubers pitching in.
At least it sounds like Hutchison has some momentum against Perry.
