Hummingbird moth (Hyla lineata?) breakfasts at the lavender in the front yard - photo by Ed Darrell

Kathryn planted lavendar on the front walk.  It crowds the walk, so you have to brush by it coming in or going out of the house, and sometimes you get a great whiff of lavender.

On the way back from getting the newspaper this morning I was greeted by this hummingbird moth sipping its breakfast from the lavender blossoms.  It was too dark for natural lighting.  The flash froze the wings, and exposed colors that you can’t see as the little creature hovers.

Probably a Hyla lineata, no?

What a thrill to see! i don’t think we have the moth here (central OR coast), but I’ll watch, just in case, when my walkway lavender blooms. Wonder if it likes rosemary, too–?

Thanks for the pictures. Our lavendar hasn’t bloomed yet (outside of Dallas). I’ll have to go moth-watching to see what we get when it comes in. Saw a Gray Hairstreak yesterday. Not that I know much about butterflies or moths beyond recognizing Swallowtails and Monarchs. I saw this little gray butterfly in my garden and looked it up on the web. Learn something new every day.
