I regret your experience was such a bad one. My Scoutmasters honored each Scouts religious preferences — and that was long ago enough that atheism was no issue. A “Branded” style ceremony would be grounds for dismissal in most councils, I think.
As to opposition to the Vietnam war, in our uber-patriotic area, Scouting was the place to find others who opposed the war on principle. It wasn’t something for which there was ever a need to express a unit or “official Scout” position.
In short, you got stuck in a lousy unit. My apologies.
I’m a former Boy Scout who left the organization at 13 (According to my Asst. Scoutmaster, the Scoutmaster had planned to eject me at our next meeting, ceremonially cutting the Scout insignia off my uniform ala “Branded”) due to my irreverence (open Atheist) and insubordination (speaking out against the Vietnam war).
Now I enjoy running into Boy Scouts soliciting publicly. I simply & loudly state, “Sorry. I don’t support groups who openly practice religious discrimination.”

We've been soaking in the Bathtub for several months, long enough that some of the links we've used have gone to the Great Internet in the Sky.
If you find a dead link, please leave a comment to that post, and tell us what link has expired.
Thanks!

My blog, Millard Fillmore's Bathtub, is a continuing experiment to test how to use blogs to improve and speed up learning processes for students, perhaps by making some of the courses actually interesting. It is a blog for teachers, to see if we can use blogs. It is for people interested in social studies and social studies education, to see if we can learn to get it right. It's a blog for science fans, to promote good science and good science policy. It's a blog for people interested in good government and how to achieve it.
