Is the heyday of the blog over? Or did I just foul it up?
At one time Millard Fillmore’s bathtub got about 2,000 hits per day. In the last 16 months, that’s dwindled to just under 1,000 per day.
Still, at that rate, the Bathtub should overflow with the 5 millionth hit, sometime in the next 5 days. It’s funny, but if I counted spam we’d be over 8 million already. 100 spam comments for every real comment, approximately.
No wonder elections turn out so oddly.
For 5 million sincere hits, I thank you, readers, and thank you especially you faithful readers.
Would you tell your friends to come check it out?
For comparison:
- Phil Plait says the Sun converts 5 million tons of matter into energy every second
- 5 million kids in public schools are English language learners, NPR estimates (Hey, kids! come on over to MFB and check things out!)
- If I had a dollar for every hit, I could buy a 30-second ad on the 2017 Super Bowl, New York Times says
- 5 million is way more than the crowd at Trump’s inauguration, and probably quite a bit more than the actual crowd at the Cubs’ World Series victory parade
Ed, I just now did my little part to promote your upcoming 5,000,000th hit by posting an invitation to view your blog on my site. You might want to check it out to make sure I got my facts straight.

I’ve been thinking about what you’ve said about the heyday of blogging being over with, Ed. And I think you might be right. But after a bit of thought, I don’t know how much that matters to me. I blog because it’s fun to write, and I think it will still be fun even if readership drops to the single digits.
By the way, I wonder what Freshwater is up to these days? Do you think he might be teaching Sunday school and electrocuting the kids there?

Of course, I would recommend your blog to my friends! It is creative, informing and entertaining! Keep up the good work – your numbers are still impressive. Cheers!

So good to see that lion avatar, Paul.
And you’re too kind.
We old guys hang in on blogging, longer than even creationists hand on to using arcing electricity to scar children!

Congratulations, Ed! That’s an excellent track record and one that is very difficult to achieve. Hats off to you!
In my opinion, you have one of the very best blogs on the net. I go through periods though when I don’t read any blogs at all. I’m just coming out of one of those, and yours was among the first blogs I returned to reading.
