I agree with Mr. Kaliway. It would be nice if people cared about the earth solely for the earth’s sake. But thankfully, it needn’t be an either-or proposition.
If I cannot appeal for tighter restrictions on (or even an end to) drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico based on the damage done to a fragile ecosystem (because people are too short sighted and stupid to care on that basis)…then you can bet I will also talk about the impact on the lives of the BP workers killed in the explosion. These were deaths that would certainly have been avoided had BP simply been using the same safety technology that is required by other countries — like Britain, France and Brazil. It would have cost BP an extra 500 thousand dollars. Were the 11 lives lost on the oil rig worth that much?

Hey thanks a bunch for linking back, Ed! Unfortunately, planet Earth simply can’t appeal to the public’s sense of sympathy the way sick babies can. We can show all the polluted waterways, forests, etc… we want, but sick babies is the only way to motivate people to actually write their congressman. Whatever works, I suppose.
