A blog hole in our galaxy!

November 20, 2007

NASA artist's conception of black hole at center of Milky Way GalaxyJust as a huge black hole can stifle star formation, so can a blog hole stifle post formation.

Woes at work and in volunteer positions — I’ve got a huge backlog of things that should be noted here, but are not noted yet — and may have to fall by the wayside.

Things change at work soon, I hope, and that should give me more time in more timely packets to think and find the stuff that needs to be here.

Thank you, Dear Reader, for bearing with me.

Feed troubles

November 12, 2007

Not sure what I’ve done, but something I did has fouled up the headlines of posts from the Bathtub in some feeds. Instead of the headline of the post, people are just getting “edarrell.”

Not sure if all feeds are fouled up or just some of them. Not sure which ones, but Technorati hasn’t listed an accurate headline in over a week. I’m wondering if it has something to do with Feedburner.

My apologies to readers who wonder what’s up. I don’t know.

300,000

November 6, 2007

Sometime tomorrow, November 7, 2007, this blog will record its 300,000th “view.”

Thanks, again.

I wonder: Does any of this have any good effect?

250,000

October 4, 2007

Quietly, the Bathtub slid past the 250,000 hits mark, on October 2.

Keep those clicks coming.

And, would it kill you to comment?

WordPress hiccoughs

September 26, 2007

No, I don’t know what’s going on with the masthead and a couple of other minor quirks.  Around WordPress, you generally get far in excess of what you pay for; on a bad day, maybe, you only get what you pay for.  The masthead will reappear, “magically, as if by magic,” as John Lennon would have said.   Sometime.

Drop me an e-mail if you have other problems.

Truth? Try here . . .

September 4, 2007

Truth.

And if you come back to check, you’ll note that the truth changes, occasionally.

Truth is, I’m just going for the iPod.

More fiddling with formats

September 4, 2007

Several complaints about the template I had been using, especially about the way it loads in Internet Explorer (switch to FireFox!).

Especially if you had problems with the last format, let me know if this one works better.

All complaints happily read.  Some even acted upon.

200,000

August 24, 2007

Sometime late Saturday or Sunday, the blog will probably kick over 200,000 hits, total, in just over 13 months.

Thank you.  Keep those cards and letters coming.

Effects of new design

August 23, 2007

No design is perfect; the current template, “Ocean Mist,” displays links to other posts when readers read a full post, when they link from another site.  Consequently, I expected, a few people might click on another post at this blog while they were here.  Traffic to other displayed links has picked up by about 50%.

One surprise has been the increased traffic to the “Why Millard Fillmore’s Bathtub” page, which is the “about” post for this blog.  Traffic is up by several multiples to that post.  There are no particular revelations there.  It’s just providing more information.

In those respects, the experiment with a new template is a success.  Everything should be so easy.

New theme

August 22, 2007

My Freudian Slip is showing (ask Dr. Buff what that means, if you’re curious).

I was checking out theme previews, working to find a theme that gives easy links to other posts while reading one post’s full text. I accidentally hit “activate.”

Opinions? Does this new theme (Ocean Mist, by the way) improve readability and navigation of the blog? Does this theme eliminate the bleeding to the left problem old versions of Internet Explorer had?

Let me know.

Cheney too racy for children

August 16, 2007

 PG-13 rating for this blog

One of those silly internet things:  Mingle2 rates blogs as if they were movies, and issues a rating like the MPAA ratings.  Millard Fillmore’s Bathtub?  We’re PG-13 here.  Why?

This rating was determined based on the presence of the following words:

  • dead (3x)
  • dick (2x)
  • shoot (1x)

In discussions of casualties in war, a history blog might use the word “dead” a few times.  Considering how often I’ve posted about World War I, World War II, the Civil War, atomic bombs, etc., it’s amazing that the word “dead” only shows up three times.

And “shoot?”  Well, shoot, it might appear as a mild oath.

I try to police even the comments to keep profanity down, to keep the blog from being banned by bot programs in junior high schools.  So, how did the word “dick” sneak in there twice?

Dick Cheney.  It’s all his fault.  You can search just like I did, in the right column of the main page.  The search also turns up a post mentioning Charles Dickens, but that would have been a third mention.

It almost makes one yearn for the last year of the Nixon administration after the firing of special prosecutor Archibald Cox, when bumper stickers quickly appeared urging Congress to “Impeach the Cox Sacker.”

Saying Vice President Cheney’s first name is profanity?  Who knew?

Difficulty viewing this blog?

July 31, 2007

Comments are not exactly at the deluge level, but I’ve heard from several people (including my wife) that the blog is bleeding out of its assigned column for reading, to the left.

WordPress tech thinks it may be a function of older versions of Internet Explorer.  They can’t duplicate the problem, nor can I.  Mozilla Firefox is my browser of choice, and the problem does not manifest there.

One solution would be to change the blog theme.  For a couple of reasons, I’m reluctant to do that — but I would like to know how much of a problem this is for readers.

Do you experience problems with text bleeding out of the columns?  Especially, do you experience this problem with the most current versions of Internet Explorer?  Do you have no problems at all?
Let me know in comments.  A change may come.

And in any case, it won’t kill you to comment, right?

Taos is beautiful this time of year

July 3, 2007

Posting is light — I’m on the road and relatively incommunicado. We’re in New Mexico, building houses with Habitat for Humanity. It’s great stuff.

Taos adobe wall

Adobe construction is amazing. It’s hitting 90 degrees Fahrenheit here by noon — adobe houses, without air conditioning or forced air of any kind stay cool well into the afternoon. Amazing.

My apologies for light posting; comment away on the stuff that is here. I’m running a few posts from the past that deserve wider audience (and more comment). And I’ll try to post from the road. So much to see and say.

Happy birthday, Ben Davidian

July 3, 2007

Wherever you are, Ben, happy birthday.  Even though you’re a Republican.

Born on the day before we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Ben is not really older than the Declaration itself.

Bellicoscenti

Good grief!  Bellicoscenti?  It’s a movement!
