Alfred Hitchcock? In Austin?

It’s a twist on the story the Mormons in Utah have a monument to — in the Mormon version, it was birds that saved them from the crickets.

UT Tower to go dark this weekend and next

Officials hope keeping the lights off will keep crickets away.

Wednesday, July 25, 2007The University of Texas will douse the Tower lights over the next two weekends in an effort to control a cricket infestation.

Officials said in a statement that brightly lit buildings are most likely to attract the largest numbers of crickets at night and in an attempt to attract fewer crickets, the university will darken the tower.

The tower will be dark Friday through Sunday and Aug. 3 through Aug. 5. Officials said keeping the lights off is a temporary measure to keep the cricket population under control and cleanup at a minimum.
