One of my all-time favorite New Yorker cartoons was the guy in the supermarket, looking at two bins of mushrooms. One was labeled “Mushrooms $1.00/pound.”
The other was labeled, “Mushrooms? $0.05/pound.”

Maybe it’s just because I write about people who couldn’t afford anything but beans and cornbread–however, I really suspect that this mushroom issue could be used as a Personality Test: to separate bold people who would take the risk of eating something they pick out of the grass from another order of fearful people who think that’s madness, not confidence.
I’m only eating mushrooms that I can buy at Raley’s!
