Flag burning suspect arrested


CBS-3 News in Springfield, Massachusetts, reports a man has been arrested and arraigned for the burning of three U.S. flags in the area.  He entered a “not guilty” plea.

    I didn’t think you did Ed. I just took the time to read the whole article from your link and I just know from comments that I get on my blog that someone would not read the link and make assumptions.

    As we both know assumption is the step we take if we want to be wrong.

    You’re right, of course. The facts of this case suggest we certainly don’t need a flag desecration amendment. I hope I didn’t imply anything more.

    Of course you need to read the complete article to see that this isn’t a first amendment issue.

    The suspect has went onto other peoples property and either stolen or burned the flag on their property. Clearly, he cannot be prosecuted for “flag burning” as that is a protected first amendment right. He can be charged with theft and destruction of public or private property because he did not own the flags and went onto other peoples property to deface the flags.

    What he has done, no matter the circumstances makes this disgraceful in my eyes. I’m sure that he could have found another way to express his displeasure with our government. I do believe that to live in America we have to respect the rights of everyone stated in the constitution. That’s why we call it a democracy.
