Robert Johnson’s centennial, May 8: Memorial to the blues

May 8, 2011, is the 100th anniversary of the birth of bluesman Robert Johnson.

In a fitting tribute to Johnson and an important coming-of-age coming-to-senses moment, First Presbyterian Church in downtown Dallas announced plans to save the old Brunswick Records Building at 508 Park Avenue, a site where Johnson recorded songs in 1937 that changed the blues, changed recording, and left us a legacy of Johnson to study from his short life.

(On at least one day of those 1937 recordings, Johnson could have brushed shoulders with the Light Crust Doughboys, the Texas Swing legends, who were recording in the same building.  The Doughboys set their own pace and gave birth to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.  Two of Texas’s greatest music legends, in the same building on the same day, both just stepping on the platform of the train to immortality.)

Saving 508 Park Avenue vexed Dallas for a couple of decades.  First, blues is not the music of Dallas cognescenti, though the world class musicians in town including Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s Jaap van Zweden tend to support the eclectic music scence and honoring musicians of all genres (and Texas is loaded with different music genres).  Second, while Park Avenue may have been a bustling business district adjunct once, Dallas’s city center suffered 50 years of decline after school desegregation.  Parts of downtown and Uptown begin to look prosperous again, but the southern peninsula of the city, away from the now-packed-with-performance venues Arts District, a freeway and ten blocks away from Uptown, with its back up against another freeway, part of Interstate 30 and the famous Dallas Mixmaster.

Plus, the building is directly across the street from the Stewpot, a kitchen operated by First Presbyterian Church to serve Dallas large and unfortunately thriving homeless population.

Who wants to renovate an abandoned building that has homeless people as scenery for the better part of the day?

Big news this week:  508 Park Avenue was sold to First Presbyterian, who have plans to save the building (and recording studio!), add a performance amphitheatre at one end of the block, and a park at the other.  This is people-friendly development well ahead of its time — there is not a resident population in that part of the city to support such a venue — yet.

Last summer, it was the neighbors, First Presbyterian Church of Dallas, who made an offer to buy 508 Park Avenue and the adjacent building and empty lot. But the deal was contingent on the city allowing the church, which also operates the Stewpot, to tear down an unrelated building next door, at 1900 Young, and replace it with an outdoor amphitheater for church socials and concerts. The Landmark Commission went into last Monday’s meeting with angels on one shoulder and devils on the other: The commission’s task force suggested approval; city staff, denial. The latter would have sent 508 Park Avenue back into purgatory.

But Landmark OK’d the plan, and the church says it will restore 508 Park Avenue to its former glory, inside and out—including the construction of a real recording studio where Johnson once sat and played “Hell Hound on My Trail.”

The church promises: It has musicians lined up to participate, but it can’t yet reveal who. The church promises: 508 Park Avenue will be resurrected.

One hell of a birthday gift for a man who supposedly sold his soul to the Devil.

So, on Robert Johnson’s 100th birthday (assuming he wasn’t really born in 1912 . . . another mystery for another time, perhaps), the news is that the legendary bluesman who burned out like a shooting star helped save one of the few examples of art deco building decoration in Dallas, when a group of Christians who help the homeless, decided to step in an update their downtown Dallas campus.

Every step of the way, it’s an unlikely story.  Truth is, in this case, much, much stranger than fiction.

Ovation Music released to YouTube the video of Eric Clapton playing and singing “Me and the Devil,” at 508 Park Avenue, in the same room where Robert Johnson sang for a record early on.  Johnson recorded the song at that same location on Sunday, June 20, 1937.

508 Park Avenue, Dallas, is already a memorial to Robert Johnson, to the blues, and to the city where these early blues hits were made.  The struggle remains to make the memorial accessible, and not threatened with destruction.

”]Farm trucks at the Worthington, Ft Worth Stock Show 2011 - Import 01-22-2011 029Photographer error makes these less than perfect — but I still like them.  Panorama shots in very bad light of four enormous farm pickups, parked in the valet parking area usually reserved for the Jaguars, Mercedes and occasional Bentley, at the Worthington Hotel in Fort Worth.  Stockmen come to Fort Worth every January and February for the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show — these are the Caddillacs and Lincolns and Mercedes of the big-money farm set.

Tuba Christmas near you?

Did I mention I really like a good tuba melody?  No, not the oompah back-up — I love it when tubas take the lead, when they sing as only a tuba can.

It’s that time of year I get a chance to hear organized tuba playing for Tuba Christmas.

Like here, in Dallas, at Thanksgiving Square  — the 31st annual Tuba Christmas (2008):

In Texas, the first performance I know of is in Brenham (home of Blue Bell Ice Cream!) on December 3; Amarillo is December 4.   Dallas is set for December 24, at Thanksgiving Square once again.

I’m back and back is beautiful, to tweak a phrase. Where have I been? Taking care of business with the helping hand of a special-special life-long friend.

For now, I’ll simply say: Life is an adventure, a gift and a grand adventure, and more than just a mite irksome at times.

These many weeks, in what little spare time I’ve had, I’ve also been writing lyrics. Everyone needs a hobby. Mine is writing lyrics.

Thus, the following song regarding our times:

October 31 hosts several famous anniversaries. It is the anniversary of Nevada’s statehood (an October surprise by Lincoln for the 1864 campaign?). It is the anniversary of the cleaving of western, catholic Christianity, as the anniversary of Martin Luther’s tacking his 95 theses to the door of the church in Wittenburg, Germany in 1517, the formal start of the Reformation. Maybe the original Christian trick or treat.

October 31 is also the anniversary of the sinking of the World War I era Clemson-class, four-stack destroyer, U.S.S. Reuben James (DD-245), by a German U-boat. Woody Guthrie memorialized the sad event in the song, Reuben James, recorded by the Almanac Singers with Pete Seeger (see also here, and here), and later a hit for the Kingston Trio. The Reuben James was sunk on October 31, 1941 — over a month before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Details via Wikipedia (just to make you school librarians nervous):

USS Reuben James (DD-245), a post-World War I four-stack Clemson-class destroyer, was the first United States Navy ship sunk by hostile action in World War II and the first named for Boatswain’s Mate Reuben James (c.1776–1838), who distinguished himself fighting in the Barbary Wars.

This history figures into the current presidential campaign in a small way: One of the internet hoax letters complaining about Barack Obama claims that the U.S. entered World War II against Germany although the Germans had not fired a single round against the U.S. The 115 dead from the crew of 160 aboard the James testify to the inaccuracy of that claim, wholly apart from the treaty of mutual defense Germany and Japan were parties to, which required encouraged Germany to declare war upon any nation that went to war with Japan (see comments from Rocky, below). After the U.S. declaration of war on Japan, Germany declared war on the U.S., creating a state of war with Germany.

This history also reminds us that many Americans were loathe to enter World War II at all. By October 1941, Japan had been occupying parts of China for ten years, and the Rape of Nanking was four years old. The Battle of the Atlantic was in full swing, and the Battle of Britain was a year in the past, after a year of almost-nightly bombardment of England by Germany. Despite these assaults on friends and allies of the U.S., and the losses of U.S. ships and merchant marines, the U.S. had remained officially neutral.

Many Americans on the left thought the sinking of the Reuben James to be the sort of wake-up call that would push Germany-favoring Americans to reconsider, and people undecided to side with Britain. The political use of the incident didn’t have much time to work. Five weeks later Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, and by the end of 1941, the U.S. was at war with the Axis Powers.

“[W]hy any loyal Aggie would vote for Rick Perry is beyond us . . .  Ten years of Rick Perry as governor are more than enough. It is time for a change and Bill White is that change. He is a strong fiscal conservative who proved as mayor of Houston that it is possible to do more with less. We’ve had the less. Now it is time for the more.”

Friday evenings at the Marine Barracks near the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps performs publicly.  It’s a free concert.  It’s a delightful way to spend a spring or fall afternoon-into-evening.  An easy walk from our old apartment on East Capitol Street S.E., and now, offering a dozen venues for a good dinner on the return.

Except, September 24 through October 10 we had them here in Dallas, at the State Fair of Texas.

Kathryn and I took advantage of Dallas ISD’s State Fair Day to carry out a dozen errands including blood chemistry checks and a run to Kenny’s school, the University of Texas at Dallas, to finish some paperwork for his visa in China.  We arrived at the State Fair in mid-afternoon, in time to catch the USMC Drum and Bugle Corps’ entire performance in a venue quite different from their usual spit-and-polish home.

Under the aegis of Big Tex, they performed on the parade ground off to the side of the Texas Women’s Museum.  The grandstands were larger than D.C.’s, but covering only three sides and leaving the backdrop open for tourists wandering by to spoil, or add interest to, the photos of other fair goers.

The group’s performance sparkled with brilliant performances in the drum and bugle corps style — we’ve been spoiled by the Duncanville High School Marching Band’s constant level of near-perfection, but were not disappointed in the crisp musicality delivered by the Marines.  These were performances to make other musicians smile and clap with joy at the sound, but delivered without a smile or hint of satisfaction in Marine unsmiling style.  Such incongruence.

Solos featured young Marines from Texas, no doubt including several who had marched in competition against Duncanville for their Texas high schools.  Performances included a Sousa march, and several new compositions from the director honoring, among others, the Navy Medical Corpsmen.  In a tribute to Texas, the group played Elmer Bernstein’s “Theme from the Sons of Katie Elder,” a John Wayne movie shot in Clearwater, Texas, more than a generation ago.  There were percussion numbers, a calypso, a cover of Gloria Estefan.

The set performance closed out with Lee Greenwood’s “I’m Proud to Be An American.”  This is one of my least favorite tunes to suffer through since most performances turn quickly to maudlin.  Not so here.  Confined to crisp drums and tight brass, the song avoided sappiness, even when the entire Corps put down their instruments for an a capella rendition of the vocal, sung quietly enough the crowd had to strain to be quiet to hear.  This lent a gravity to the lyric that is completely missing from a country band’s high-volume blast.

In a drum and bugle corps, all the horns must function as bugles do -- valves are allowable, so trumpets appear in the group. But there are no slide trombones, no French horns. They are replaced instead by euphonium and mellophone. The groups use tubas with mouthpiece extensions to make them work like bugles, no Sousaphones. In the midst of people who didn’t want to pay attention, watched over by the bare-breasted art-deco titaness guarding the Texas Women’s Museum, and in the heat of a Texas October, the USMC Drum and Bugle Corps played as tightly and honorably as they do at more sober and somber venues.  It was great.

I was surprised when the group marched off after an hour’s concert, to the “Marine Corps Hymn.”  They marched a half-mile to one of the fair’s midways, and performed another mini-concert.  Still no visible sweat in the heat.

Music stopped the deadly sniper

Fascinating story well told by the man who lived it:  After D-Day, an Allied unit was pinned down by a sniper.  Unable to move, and on an inspired whim, one of the American soldiers, Jack Leroy Tueller,  took out his trumpet, and played “Lili Marlene.”

In the morning he was introduced to a German soldier, a sniper who had surrendered, unable to keep fighting after some mysterious trumpeter played the song that made him think of his home, his mother, his girlfriend, and love.

Two minutes of amazing history, vividly told and played, suitable for classroom use.

Jack Tuler, his story, or where he livesCould this be the late Jack Tuler of Chicago? Hey, anyone:  Where is Jack Tueller today?  Who has his life details?  (Tueller lives today in Bountiful, Utah, with his wife, Marjorie.  He still plays the trumpet.)

Update, October 3, 2010: Reader J. A. Higginbotham tracked down two stories in the Deseret News, in Salt Lake City, about Col. Tueller.  I’ve corrected the spellings above, and edited otherwise to point to the details.  A new post is probably warranted.  Go to the Deseret News site and read their fine work, especially the long story by Doug Robinson.

Sad to hear, Jack Tueller died in 2016, at age 95.
