This is a little embarrassing.
I missed National Trails Day this year.
Heck, I’ve missed it every year since its inception in 1993.
As usual, I’ll have to hit the trails later in the summer — hello, Colorado Bend State Park. You can make it up, too. National Trails Day is a celebration that can be done any time you find to do it, really, any place you find to celebrate it.
So, hey, buddy: Take a hike!
And have fun doing it.
Information and resources for National Trails Day:
- American Hiking Society press release: Mike Rowe urges Americans to get their hands dirty on National Trails Day 2011; or read it at Mike Rowe’s site
- In 2010, Sec. of Interior Ken Salazar announced the designation of 31 trails in 15 states as national recreation trails, part of the National Trails System; one will not encounter John Galt on any of them. Here in Texas, the designation included the Lacy Point Nature Trail on the west shore of Waco Lake, and the Knob Hills Trail in Flower Mound, along the shore of Grapevine Lake, in the DFW Metroplex.

- Derrick Crandall’s Outdoor Recreation Coalition site (Crandall was one of the commissioners of the PCAO)
- Americans Outdoors: The Legacy, the Challenge. With Case Studies. The Report of the President’s Commission. At ERIC Library’s on-line site (there’s a small world for you — I went from PCAO to OERI and had ERIC under my charge; glad we were able to save it then).
