I noticed two events that share a day, though five years apart, and I wonder whether it was coincidence.
- June 28, 1914 – Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the crown prince of Austria, and his wife Sofia, were assassinated in Sarajevo, a Serbian city held in the Austro-Hungarian empire, by a Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip. This was the proximate cause of World War I.
- June 28, 1919 – The Treaty of Versailles was signed in Paris, effectively ending World War I.
Pure coincidence, or macabre planning by diplomats? Anyone know?
[…] June 28 coincidence? […]

Though I’ve long since forgotten where I read it, there has been some scholarship to the effect that the treaty signing was held off a few days to make it symbolic. Considering how the armistice began at 11:11 on November 11, it comes as no surprise.

Intentional & symbolic. Not intentionally macabre.
